Westhaven Center for the Arts

3/2/20

Westhaven Center For The Arts is proud to announce an exhibition of intoxicating work by Big Lagoon artist Matt Dodge.  Titled “Sculpted Photographs”, the display hangs for the months of March and April, with an opening reception Sunday, March 1 from 1 to 4 PM.

Matt Dodge works in a unique, self-developed technique.  Beginning with photographs taken while pursuing outdoor activities, the images are digitally edited and printed in black and white on canvas.  Next, color is applied by hand, using inks and dyes, pencils and pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors.  Outlines, textures and design motifs are then steadfastly and meticulously carved into the core of the canvas using X-Acto knives and engraving tools.  These steps are repeated if necessary, until the image reveals itself.  Wire is sometimes stitched through the canvas as a final embellishment.  Every resulting work, which Dodge terms “sculpted photographs”,  is a one-of-a-kind handmade art treasure.

“Matt's work is unlike anything I have ever seen,” says Exhibit Coordinator, Ann Anderson, “The first time I saw it, I wanted to display it at the Center, and we are so excited to share it with the community.” To see more of his work, go to mattdodgeimages.com

Westhaven Center is located at 501 South Westhaven Drive.  Regular gallery hours are Friday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.  For more information, call 677-9493, visit on Facebook at Westhaven Center for the Arts or on the website westhavencenter.org.
